'Trumbo' leads 22nd Annual SAG Awards with three nominations

Early this morning, the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced. The yearly SAG Awards honor the best in motion picture and television for the prior calendar year. The nominations were announced by actress Anna Faris ("Mom") and Anthony Mackie ("Captain America") at the Pacific Design Center's Silver Screen Theatre in West Hollywood, California, on Wednesday, December 9, 2015. Leading the nominations in the motion picture category was the biopic of blacklisted writer "Trumbo," and three television series tied for the top of the TV nominations, which are "Homeland," "Game of Thrones," and "House of Cards," all receiving three nominations. The 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony will be television live on Saturday, January 30, 2016 on the TV networks TNT and TBS.

"Trumbo" topped the film category with three nominations, earning nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Bryan Cranston and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Helen Mirren.

Surprisingly, the Netflix original motion picture "Beasts of No Nations" receive a nomination for best cast and a nomination for Best Supporting Actor to Idris Alba.

Another wild surprise was the nomination for "Straight Outta Compton," for best cast. Universal pictures has been promoting the film quite a bit and it appears their work has paid off. But with no other nominations, its doubtful that the film about rap music will win in this category.

The nominations of "Spotlight" and "The Big Short" for best casts were not surprising at all. But the most glaring snub the lack of any nominations for the film "Mad Max: Fury Road," which was named best film by the National Board of Review.

The nominations for best male actor was a fairly predictable lot of five actors. Johnny Depp received his SAG nomination for his performance as mobster Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass." This is Depp's fifth SAG nomination. The actor won in this category in 2004 for his performance in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”

Bryan Cranston received his SAG nomination for his performance in the biopic about screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in "Trumbo." Cranston has won four SAG Awards, three of which he won for his incredible performance in the AMC television series "Breaking Bad," and one SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in the motion picture "Agro," in 2013.

Michael Fassbender was also nominated for a performance in a biopic, his performance as Steve Jobs in the film "Steve Jobs." This brings his total number of SAG nominations to four. Fassbender won previously for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for "Inglorious Bastards," in 2010.

Last year's winner in this category, Eddie Redmayne was nominated for his performance in the transgender, period film "The Danish Girl." This is Redmayne's second nomination throughout his career.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for his biting performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu's "The Revenant." This marks DiCaprio's ninth nomination. DiCaprio has been eager to take home a SAG Award and so far as gone home without one. But this is DiCaprio's year. He is definitely the front-runner to win the trifecta of movie awards: The Screen Actors Guild Award, The Golden Globe Award and an Oscar.

The female actors was a little bit surprising in its results. Happily Helen Mirren's performance in "Woman in Gold," was not overlooked. The film was released last spring and many award watchers have been worried that her glorious performance may be forgotten. Along with her nomination for Best Supporting Actress, this marks Mirren's 13th SAG nomination throughout her career. She has won five SAG Awards.

Also surprising is the nomination for Sarah Silverman in the little seen film "I Smile Back." In this film Silverman plays a mother and wife with bio-polar disease and battling addiction. This is Silverman's first SAG nomination.

There was no surprise that Cate Blanchett received a nomination for her performance in the highly acclaimed Todd Haynes film "Carol." This is Blanchett's 14th SAG nomination throughout her career. She has won three SAG Awards, which include a win just two years ago for her performance in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine."

Brie Larson, who has been getting the most attention prior to the kick-off of award season, was nominated for her emotional performance in "Room." Larson has been receiving a lot of attention as a star on the rise and this marks her first SAG nomination.

Another wonderful surprise is the nomination for Saoirse Ronan who just steals hearts as an Irish immigrant in "Brooklyn." It's somewhat unusual for a such a personal character portrait to receive such award-worthy attention, but the film is definitely due the attention, as well as Saoirse who is in every scene of the film. This is Ronan's second SAG nomination. She was nominated as part of the cast just last year for her performance in "The Grand Budapest Hotel."

Sadly, Lily Tomlin was overlooked for her dry and witty performance in "Grandma." With honors that separate comedies from drama, perhaps the Golden Globes will not make the same mistake.

Supporting male actor nominees include Idris Elba for "Beasts of No Nation," Christian Bale for "The Big Short," Michael Shannon for "99 Homes," Mark Rylance for "Bridge of Spies," and Jacob Tremblay for "Room."

Female actors nominated for the supporting category in a motion picture include Rachel McAdams for "Spotlight," Rooney Mara for "Carol," Alicia Vikander for "The Danish Girl," Helen Mirren for "Trumbo," and Kate Winslet for "Steve Jobbs."
