'Carol' leads Golden Globe Awards with five nominations
Early this morning, the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Award nominations were announced. The yearly Golden Globe Awards are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and honor the best in motion picture and television for the prior calendar year. The nominations were announced by America Ferrera, Chloe Grace Moretz and Dennis Quaid on Thursday, December 10, 2015. Leading the nominations in the motion picture category was Todd Hayne's intimate portrait of a lesbian love affair during the 1950's in "Carol," which leads the race with five nominations and six television series tied for the top of the TV nominations, which are "American Crime," "Fargo," "Mr. Robot," "Outlander," "Transparent," and "Wolf Hall," all receiving three nominations. The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony will be television live on Sunday, January 10, 2016 on NBC.
"Carol" dominated the motion picture film category with five nominations, which included a nomination for Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama to "Carol's" stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, a nomination to its director Todd Haynes and a nomination to Carter Burwell for 'Carol's" musical score.
Other films receiving nominations for Best Motion Picture - Drama were "Mad Max Fury Road," "The Reverant," "Room," and "Spotlight." Missing from this list is "Trumbo," which topped the nominations by the SAG awards just yesterday.
Of the acting honors, up for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama are Bryan Cranston for "Trumbo," Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Reverant," Michael Fassbender for "Steve Jobs, " Eddie Redmayne for "The Danish Girl" and Will Smith for "Concussion." Johnny Depp is missing from this list for his performance as Whitey Bulger in "Black Mass." The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has had a love affair with Depp and this snub is quite surprising. No matter though, as Leonardo DiCaprio is a sure bet to be honored for his biting performance in "The Reverant," as this will be his first stop on to the trifecta of movie awards, which will conclude with DiCaprio finally winning his first Oscar.
Vying for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama are Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara for "Carol," Brie Larson for "Room," Saoirse Ronan for "Brooklyn," and Alicia Vikander for "The Danish Girl." Unfortunately, the HFPA overlooked one of the best performances of the year, that by Helen Mirren in "Woman in Gold."
Unlike other major movie awards, the Golden Globes separates the film categories to give comedies and musical a larger platform. Films nominated for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical are "The Big Short," "Joy," "The Martian," "Spy," and "Trainwreck."
Actors being honored with nominations for Best Actor - Musical or Comedy are Christian Bale and Steve Carell for "The Big Short," Matt Damon for "The Martian," Al Pacino for "Danny Collins," and Mark Ruffalo for "Infinitely Polar Bear." Surprising that Paul Dano was not nominated in this list for his performance in "Love & Mercy," instead he was nominated in the supporting category.
Competing for Best Actress - Musical or Comedy are Jennifer Lawrence for "Joy," Melissa McCarthy for "Spy," Amy Schumer for "Trainwreck," Maggie Smith for "The Lady in the Van," and Lily Tomlin for "Grandma." Bravo for the HFPA for not overlooking Lily Tomlin in her witty performance in "Grandma." Again, the HFPA veered from its usual course and left off this list Meryl Streep for her performance for "Ricki and the Flash." True the film was not that great, but Streep's long musical moments should have seen some recognition.
The Golden Globes narrows the list of supporting actors to just five for both male and female performers. The male actors being recognized with nominations are Paul Dano for "Love & Mercy," Idris Elba for "Beasts of No Nation," Mark Rylance for "Bridge of Spies," Michael Shannon for "99 Homes" and Sylvester Stallone for "Creed." This award really could go to anyone of the list. Paul Dano showed the most versatility playing the young Brian Wilson and Sylvester Stallone may be the emotional pick for his nuanced performance as he returned to his Rocky Balboa persona in "Creed."
Female actors up for supporting nominations are Jane Fonda, "Youth," Jennifer Jason Leigh, "The Hateful Eight," Helen Mirren, "Trumbo," Alicia Vikander, "Ex Machina," and Kate Winslet, "Steve Jobs." Bravo to the HFPA for finally recognizing Vikander in "Ex Machina," it's too bad that this film has not received more attention. This award just may go to Jennifer Jason Leigh for her work in Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight," or possible to Helen Mirren for her vileness role as the black listing gossip columnist in "Trumbo."
