'Star Wars' & 9 other films make short list for VFX Oscar Race
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced today (Monday, December 21, 2015) in a press release, that "Star Wars: A Force Awakens" and 9 other films have made the short list to vie for Visual Effects Oscar Race. The next cut will occur at the Oscar nominations, set to be held on Thursday, January 14, 2016, in Beverly Hills, California. The 88th Academy Awards that will be broadcast live on Oscar Sunday, February 28, 2016, on ABC. Chris Rock will be hosting this year's ceremony which will be seen in over 225 countries across the globe.

This shortlist was decided by the Academy's Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee. Now all member of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view excerpts from each of the films on Saturday, January 9, 2016. At the conclusion of the screening, the members will vote to determine the five final nominated films for Oscar consideration.
Look for “Ex Machina,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Martian,” “The Revenant,” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to make the final cut. “Jurassic World,” also stands a good chance at a nomination. Along with stunning visual effects and taking in consideration the difficulty to create such effects, the overall standing of the film also a factor in deciding the five nominated films.
