'The Revenant' top Golden Globe Awards with 3 wins, Leonardo DiCaprio also wins

The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards were handed out this evening, Sunday, January 10, 2016, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The yearly Golden Globe Awards are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and honor the best in motion pictures and television for the prior calendar year. Ricky Gervais was the host of the celebration, bringing his unique brand of humor to the event. The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony was televised live on NBC.

Being the first of the three big award shows, "The Revenant," took top position tonight against other films that were expected to do well - especially "Spotlight" and "The Big Short." "The Revenant took home three honors, include Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director to Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Best Actor in a Drama to Leonardo DiCaprio.

"The Martian" took home two honors, including Best Motion Picture Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy to Matt Damon - which is quite a fête, since the film is really not a comedy.

"Steve Jobs" also nabbed two honors. The first to Aaron Sorkin for penning the screenplay and the second to actress Kate Winslet for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

Other winners in the film categories included the beautiful and young Brie Larson for her heartbreaking performance in "Room," Jennifer Lawrence for her performance in David O. Russell's film "Joy," and Sylvester Stallone for his nuanced performance as Rocky Balboa in "Creed."

No surprises in the Best Animated Film category when "Inside Out" won, or in the Best Foreign Film category when the holocaust film "Son of Saul" took top honors. Both films look poised to win Oscars next month.

In the TV categories, "Mr. Robot" and "Mozart in the Jungle" tied with top honors - winning two awards each.

Actor Denzel Washington was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which is the honorary award to celebrate his contribution to motion pictures. His speech was touching as his wife (on stage) fed him things to say as was unable to read his speech - he forgot his glasses.

Most interesting moment on stage was when Ricky Gervais introduced Mel Gibson, both giving jabs at each other. And of course Gervais was not guarded in his remarks during the entire show, but that was to be expected.
